“Polished Musicianship”
– Oasis Concert Review by Steve Johnston,
Contemporary Composer
The Oasis Ensemble, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Eugene, is a professional classical music trio dedicated to performing high-quality concerts, expanding the repertoire through commissions, and producing recordings that leave a lasting artistic impact. With flutist Dawn Weiss, cellist Louis Lowenstein, and their new pianist Dr. Tung Nguyen, they bring a vibrant mix of artistry and innovation to the stage. Their previous pianist, Andrew Cannestra, has accepted the position of piano professor at St. Olaf College. He will periodically join them as a guest artist.
Originally conceived as a flute and cello duo, Oasis Ensemble immediately recognized both the beautiful sonic qualities and the limitations of that instrumentation. While the sonorities of flute and cello offered striking color and range, standard repertoire was surprisingly scarce. To help fill that gap, Oasis began commissioning new works for the duo, building fresh repertoire that could stand alongside the classics. In 2023, the ensemble expanded to a trio to include piano, opening the door to a larger range of established works as well as exciting new possibilities. Their performances now pair standard masterworks with hidden treasures, and newly commissioned compositions, creating programs that are both familiar and adventurous.
In April 2025, Oasis Ensemble launched its first international “Call for Scores Competition,” which has drawn over 60 submissions from composers around the world representing more than 24 countries. The overwhelming response highlighted the extraordinary creativity of living composers, and their enthusiastic desire to collaborate with Oasis. Oasis Ensemble is committed to performing and sharing many of these works over the next two seasons. Check out their website below to see their full 2025-2026 season.
This season, Oasis Ensemble will be performing five completely different programs, including an added Classical Music Holiday Concert, a concert featuring brand new works by Cascadia Composers, and programs featuring well-known composers along with several world premieres. In total they will perform at least 26 concerts around the state of Oregon with concerts in Eugene, Florence, Newport, Lincoln City, Corvallis and Portland. Their last program of the season will feature the winning composition from the “2025 Oasis Ensemble Call for Scores” and will include a world premiere by Ryan Johnston.
With a mission to deeply touch people’s lives through excellence in artistry, Oasis Ensemble continues to expand its role in Oregon’s cultural landscape commissioning, performing, and recording music that resonates today and will inspire generations to come.
