Oasis Ensemble is delighted to perform an all-duo recital at the Mandala Sanctuary. It is the perfect, intimate environment to experience the nuances of small-ensemble chamber music, up-close. This concert features Dawn Weiss, former principal flutist of the Oregon Symphony, and Louis Lowenstein, long-time member of both the Pittsburgh Symphony and Chicago Symphony. We will be presenting an evening of joyful music written specifically for us! These charming works fully utilize the vibrant colors of the flute and cello, each in their own unique ways. Los Angeles composer, Carol Worthey completed “Oasis” for us in October, 2023. It depicts a journey to reach one’s own oasis for spiritual renewal, and invokes a prayer for inner and outer peace (2023). Portland composer, Brent Weaver’s “Six Vignettes”, composed for us in early 2024, brilliantly captures the tone and textures of both the flute and cello. Weaver uses classical techniques while imbedding snazzy jazz elements. It is a very fun romp! Then, we invite you into a dreamlike reflective space with Eugene composer Andrew Lewinter’s “Waltz” (2019). After that, we pick up the pace with Roberto Di Marino’s “Fandango.” Written in 2019, it is a buoyant collage of dance music. The composer describes “Fandango” as “A postmodern, semi-serious pastiche.” It is an exhilarating crowd pleaser, which can make you feel like dancing! We will also include Louis Lowenstein’s delightful arrangement (2023) of Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow.” And no classical concert is complete without music by J.S. Bach! Who knew that Bach’s “Two-Part Inventions” work perfectly for Flute & Cello Duo!! Please join us for an exhilarating and musically satisfying evening!
